The “recipe” for Creative Writing

Inspired by food, wine and travelling to write his books, Matthew Frank visits Greece and discusses withauthor, translator and Adjunct Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the Hellenic American University, Vassilis Manoussakis, on the boundaries that seem to define contemporary nonfiction writing. It’s the only genre defined by what it’s not. It’s not fiction, but what is it then? How far can a writer stretch a fact before it becomes a fiction? To what degree and to what end must the nonfiction essay writer attempt to reach toward the always-nebulous limits of truth?

Matthew Frank is among others author of The Mad Feast: An Ecstatic Tour Through America’s Food (November 2015, W.W. Norton: Liveright), Preparing the Ghost: An Essay Concerning the Giant Squid and Its First Photographer (June 2015, W.W. Norton: Liveright) and Barolo (2010, The University of Nebraska Press). He has taught creative writing at the Grand Valley State University in Michigan and is currently Assistant Professor at the Northern Michigan University.

The event is organized by the Hellenic American Union and Hellenic American College (HAEC) in cooperation with the Hellenic Foundation for Culture.
