Europe's existential crisis is evident not only in the foreign policy of the European Union and its member-countries, but also in the everyday life of its citizens. The economic recession, the unprecedented flows of refugees and migrants, the escalation of the terrorist threat and the rise of far-right extremist movements have prompted a redefinition of the issues of diversity and national borders. Are there ways out of this ominous landscape? Can European cohesion be maintained? How can solidarity and democracy be preserved? Can we find fertile grounds for promoting entrepreneurship and fostering new and stronger economic and social ties?

Guest speakers to the event will attempt to provide answers to these and other questions on October 18, 2016.

Speaking at the event will be:

  • Giorgos Koumoutsakos, Member of the Greek Parliament, spokesperson of the Nea Demokratia party, former member of the European Parliament.
  • Panagiotis K. Ioakimidis, Professor emeritus at the University of Athens and collaborator of “Ta Nea” newspaper
  • Athanasios Papandropoulos, journalist and Executive Director of the Greek Department of the Association of European Journalists

Introductory remarks:

  • Leonidas-Phoebus Koskos, President of Hellenic American University

The event is organized by Hellenic American College / Hellenic American University in cooperation with the Greek Department of the Association of European Journalists and the Hellenic American Union, and it is the fifth in the series of round-table discussions titled “Dialog for Development.”
