In the words of the organizers of the event, since the Greek War of Independence and the first constitutions, Greeks have used the cultural legacy of Ancient Greece and their relation to the West as key elements in their self-determination. Almost every pre-revolutionary constitution and post-revolutionary institution were based on Enlightenment teachings on freedom and the western-type democratic acquis established during the French Revolution. Is contemporary Greek society indeed a Western one? Does the Greek state in fact function according to such standards? Does Greece belong to the West? Guest speakers to the event will attempt to provide answers to these and other questions on April 4, 2015.

Speaking at the event will be:

  • Thanos Veremis, Professor Emeritus, University of Athens and Vice-President of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP)
  • Pascalis M. Kitromilidis, Professor of Political Science at the University of Athens and Director of Center for Asia Minor Studies
  • Takis Theodoropoulos, writer and journalist at Kathimerini

Mr. Leonidas-Phoebus Koskos, President of Hellenic American University will moderate the panel discussion. Mr. Athanasios Papandropoulos, Executive Director of the Greek Department of the Association of European Journalists, will make a few introductory remarks. The event is organized by Hellenic American College / Hellenic American University in cooperation with the Greek Department of the Association of European Journalists and the Hellenic American Union, and it is the fourth in the series of round-table discussions called Dialog for Development.”
